In late 1996 a Bible study group of Cantonese speaking families from the Family Worship Service was formed. Then in July 1997, this language congregation was birthed as 15 people gathered in the ICA main auditorium for their first worship service. Currently our worship services are taking place at our Tanner Road facilities.
Rev Betty Chung became the pastor of the Cantonese congregation in July 2006. For Rev Betty, ICA was her first church. She found the Lord Jesus here and began to develop her relationship with Him. She grew in faith, was nurtured, and baptized here. When Rev Betty was first saved she had an instant burden to serve God and the Cantonese-speaking people. With this strong call on her life it was not going to be long before her job was going to give way to a new passion and in 2002 she gave up her career as an architect to pursue a Master of Divinity degree at EBC. She received her degree in 2006. During her equipping studies at EBC she acted as an assistant pastor in the Cantonese congregation at ICA and then in July 2006 took over the role as Pastor of this congregation.
The Pastor's vision begins with seeing the church, the body of believers, as a life-changing place with God doing all of the changing works. It is exciting and challenging to watch God unfold His changing plans in the lives of the people in this congregation, who are generally first generation Christians. Her passion and vision carries on with a burden for families and friends of families. Acts 16:31 is a basis for this vision, "They answered, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you and your family will be saved.” (God's Word Translation). Reaching families so they can be saved and have a relationship with the Lord Jesus (life-changing) so they can reach others.
As the congregation grows in size with new families joining, it is also growing in size from within as the individual families grow. This presents a need to reach out and meet the needs of growing children and youth groups, ministering to them with relevance in a real world, training them, discipling them so they can grow up strong in our Lord and reach others for His Glory.
Peering down the road we are in great anticipation of seeing our entire congregation growing spiritually so that 100 percent of the members are in service of some manner for the Kingdom and Glory of God. As we move on to our future maturity, complacency and non-committal attitudes will disappear and be replaced by a service-oriented congregation.
