Day 66 Bible Reading: Numbers 8-9, Mark 13, Psalm 50 and Proverb 10:29-30 Link opens new window

A team of neuroscientists based in Singapore have documented what’s going on in the brain when the battle to stay awake is momentarily lost. The researchers discovered as the test participant’s wakefulness slipped away, they were shutting down their connection to the outside world. The bottom line of the report is, “…at any given time, our conscious experience is the result of hidden, internal neural tugs-of-war — what we pay attention to, what we remember, how we choose, and in this case whether we actually stay awake, all comes down to the tussle between competing neural networks.” (“What’s Happening in Your Brain When You Can’t Stay Awake” by Christian Jarrett). Just like our brain’s tug-of-war, we struggle to obey Jesus’ command for His followers to be alert to what is going on. We need to be about our Father’s business and faithful to His calling in our lives.

"Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake." – Mark 13:35-37 ‭‬‭(English Standard Version)

"I am amazed Lord how my physical body needs rest and sleep. You made us this way! Help me to be spiritually awake to the time at hand. I desire to be about the work You have given me to do and keep my waking hours in Your control. In Jesus' name, Amen."
