Day 28
In saying this Jesus was not suggesting that He was not good. Jesus was and is. Jesus answered this way because He knew how much our concept of goodness needs stretching and correcting.
People sometimes point to all the suffering and struggling that happens on this earth as evidence that God is not good. So what makes God good? It is Jesus. The goodness of God is perfectly defined, described and demonstrated in Jesus, who is God in the flesh.
The ministry of Jesus when He was here on earth, His words and works all point to the goodness of God. Above all, when Jesus willingly allows His body to be beaten and broken for the sake of people who turned their backs on Him, and when, with His final breath on the cross, prays for their forgiveness, what is this telling us about God?
17 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. - Mark 10:17-18 (ESV)
"Dear Father, teach me to be good in the way of Jesus so that I may demonstrate goodness in all things I do. Help me to shine so brightly that people will see the goodness of Christ in me. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen!"
