Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.

Joy in the Crack

Reflection When there is misunderstanding from family, rejection from colleagues, or persecution from the world, we should not be unprepared or surprised. Scripture reminds us: “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.” (John 15:18). The world persecuted Jesus, and it will also persecute us (John 15:20). Suffering as Christians is inevitable, yet we count it all joy that we are considered worthy to share in Christ’s sufferings. In face of the cracks of hardship, let us rejoice and be glad, not because it is pleasant, but because “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake…” (Matthew 5:10a), and because it is a proof that the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon us! Let us allow God to use suffering to refine us and to reveal His glory through us.

Prayer Dear Heavenly Father, when suffering comes, search and examine our hearts. If it is the fruit of sin, let us repent and be restored. But if our conscience is clear, grant us grace and mercy to bless those who oppose us, and give us faith and strength to stand firm upon Your truth. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
