Don't be afraid of anything you are about to suffer. Listen! Be faithful to me, even if it means death, and I will give you life as your prize of victory. The church in Smyrna didn't appear to be doing well – trouble, poverty, persecution. But what did Jesus see? Jesus encouraged them to remain faithful and tough like a rock. Faithfulness in the face of suffering was not uncommon for the early Church.
What of the Church today? The Church is still tough. The people that constitute it are tough like rocks (1 Peter 2). Christ their Cornerstone is so tough that even death cannot overcome. When suffering comes on account of our faith, let's remain faithful to Jesus without fear of earthly death. From there, trust God for guidance (Luke 21:13-15). In Jesus' name, be tough!
Heavenly Father, thank You for our eternal hope in Christ. We pray with those being persecuted for their faith: grant them joy, strength, and hope in You each day as they remain tough, unbreakable when covered by Your hand. In Jesus' name, Amen.
