Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honour your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”Ephesians 6:1-3 (ESV)
One of my earliest childhood memories was seeing how my mother honoured her parents. She loved them, treasured them and provided for them when they were old. Growing up, I found my mother’s love towards us also unconditional. Her sacrificial love was one that inspired us as we raised our own son. In my parents’ golden years now, I find it gratifying and honouring to God, to love, honour and provide for them.
Forgive us Father God, if we have not obeyed your Word in the Fifth Commandment in any instance, toward our earthly parents. Help us to see them through Your loving eyes that You died on the Cross for them as well as for us. Help us to honour our parents that You may be glorified. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
