“Enough of this, God! Take my life!” Elijah fell asleep under the lone broom bush. Suddenly an angel shook him awake and said, “Get up and eat!” He looked around and by his head were a loaf of bread baked on some coals and a jug of water. He ate the meal and went back to sleep.

1 Kings 19:3-6 (MSG, shortened)

Day 248 – Rested Listening

Elijah had faced the biggest test of his life, confronting the Israelites with God's call to repentance. When the outcome was not favourable, he lost heart. He even told God to take his life. Curiously, God didn't answer. He first sent an angel to give him food and water. Then He let Elijah sleep. Only afterwards, God spoke.

When God speaks, we listen - but to listen well, let us be well-rested. Even the wisest words don't register with a tired, hungry, grumpy saint.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your mercies that are new every day. We still our souls before You to hear You speak. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
