These are Jesus’ instructions. In other Bible versions, “wise” is also translated as “shrewd”. We are in a world where we sometimes need to take decisive actions, to compete, to even to out-manoeuvre others. We must be well balanced, be strong and yet able to fulfil the Great Commission. Our intent needs to be pure. We must operate with integrity and be as innocent as doves.
Jesus wants us to be shrewd as well. We should not deceive others but at the same time, we do not want to be deceived. We need to stay guarded, take precaution and be prepared. We must be authentic but we cannot be naive.
Lord Jesus, give us a pure heart, equip us with wisdom and shrewdness. Strengthen Your people, that even as sheep amongst the wolves, we can make disciples of all nations. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
