The ox knows its master, the donkey its owner's manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand.Isaiah 1:3 (NIV)
Even though the ox and the donkey are probably the least intelligent of domesticated animals, they can still recognise their owner or master. Isaiah contrasts the brutish stupidity of Israel with these animals. Isaiah quoted, “when Israel does not know”; the nation does not acknowledge its Master and Owner. Israel is God's people by election, by covenant, by pardoning grace and ultimately, Jesus came as the long awaited Messiah for Israel and the Gentiles.
Father, help us to be wise and clever like the ox that recognises the lordship of the master and is obedient, submissive and loyal to the Creator Owner. Help us to put You first as our Lord and Master. You first loved us when we were sinners and now, we are brought close to You, God, through the redemptive grace by way of the Cross of Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
