“But I’m in my nightgown—do you expect me to get dressed? I’m bathed and in bed—do you want me to get dirty?”
Song of Solomon 5:3 (MSG)

Songs of Solomon, chapter five tells us about a dream the Shulamite Bride has. In her dream she has gone to bed. She hears her bridegroom knocking on the door. She thinks, “But, I’m in my nightgown-do you expect me to get dressed? (MSG Bible).” He continues knocking. He becomes impatient and goes away. Our expectations of others can be very self-focused. However, God has given us the grace to forgive. As God’s children, we can learn to be gracious and understand. Our unmet expectations of our spouse can be very demanding and selfish, and only thinking of our needs, our wants. Why do we draw on the grace to forgive? We forgive others, as Jesus has forgiven us.
Lord, thank You for taking the punishment for our sins of selfishness. We need You Lord and we appreciate Your grace. That is always more than enough, to be forgiving of others’ weaknesses and failures to meet our expectations. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
