Go therefore and make disciples of all nations; baptising them...teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. Behold I am with you always.
Matthew 28: 19-20 (ESV)
A friend used to associate this verse with going as a missionary to Africa. He was fearful that if he was truly called to go, he might not have the strength to obey.
Over the years, he learnt that the word “go” was meant to apply to three things: making disciples, baptising them and teaching them to obey God’s commandments. He came to understand that not everyone is called to go to somewhere exotic to make disciples, that he can and should “go” right here in HK.
So, he devoted himself to “making disciples” at work, by his treatment of staff, his interest in nurturing young talent and by setting an example in obeying God’s teachings. He encouraged baptism and showed by example the importance of obedience to God, whether making large decisions or small.
Father God, help me to “go and make disciples” right where I am, by intentionally building close relationships so that I can share authentically how much You mean to me. Help me to access the power of the Holy Spirit living in me to guide me when I do not know who to approach, what to say and how to obey You in tough situations. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
