I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Philippians 1:12, 21 (ESV)
What has joy got to do with suffering? Is it possible to rejoice in the midst of suffering? Paul could not choose his circumstances; he was imprisoned in chains, but he could choose how he responded to his circumstances. He made choices that helped him triumph over his sufferings, resul7ng in joy.
How did he do it? Philippians 1 tells us Paul constantly chose to focus his mind and life purpose on Jesus (v21); on advancing the gospel of Jesus Christ (v12), devoting himself to thanksgiving and prayer with joy (v4), being encouraged by the prayers of the saints and receiving the help of the Holy Spirit (v19).
Maybe you are going through pain and suffering because you have lost a loved one, or you are dealing with health issues or a relationship breakdown. Choosing God’s way to go through times of hardships and suffering enables us to endure and even come through triumphantly, growing to be more Christ-like.
Father, give us wisdom to choose Your higher Ways, especially in 8mes of hardship. With Your ever-present help, we can triumph with joy over our suffering and grow to be more like Christ. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
