Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate.
Luke 15:22-23 (ESV)
Then he said to them, "Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength (fortress).Nehemiah 8:10 (ESV)
The Bible tells of those who were downcast but later discovered the secret of finding joy in the Lord. King David's heartfelt repentance was followed by prayer for restoration of salvation's joy (Ps. 51:1). The prodigal son's hesitant return was overridden by beholding the father's joy in his embrace, donning the robe of sonship, ring and shoes, and partaking in the celebration of his homecoming.
During Nehemiah's time, the Israelites mourned their failures and burdens. After hearing the long-lost covenantal Word from the priest and with the sub-congregation leaders' guidance, revival happened as they anchored themselves in the revelation that "the joy of the Lord is your strength [fortress) (Neh. 8:10). The next day, they renewed their observance of the Feast of Tabernacles (Neh. 8:33-38), celebrating God with us.
The Father's joy towards us is based on the joy in the Son and His accomplished work. Our strength therefore rests on this fortress of joy found in Christ.
Lord, we pray for those who battling depression to find joy in You. You came 2,000 years ago for us.
Strengthen us to learn the joy of focusing on You and making You the centre of our lives. In Your
Name, Amen.
