“And when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, “What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David.” So Israel went to their tents. But Rehoboam reigned over the people of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah. Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was taskmaster over the forced labor, and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. And King Rehoboam hurried to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.”

Wise Counsel

Reflection “The Scandal of Leadership” by JR Woodward highlights reasons that often lead to the downfall of many high-profile leaders, including pride, self-centeredness, manipulation, the pursuit of status, popularity, and approval from others. Rehoboam’s story reminds us of the significance of seeking counsel, considering different perspectives, and making decisions based on wisdom rather than ego. This prompts us to reflect on our own leadership styles and attitudes towards authority, urging us to cultivate humility and open-mindedness in our interactions with others. A good Christ follower needs to reflect on themself regularly and practice self-emptying spirituality that will reshape their desire and form a Christ-centered vision in serving God in this world.

Prayer Lord, we pray for wisdom and knowledge like Solomon but also humility and open-mindedness in our interactions with others. Help us to resist the temptation of focusing on our own ego. Let us be rooted in the Word and respond with love and loyalty towards You and others. Help us to abide in our true identity as Your children, loving and serving You with pure and humble hearts, as we surrender to the Spirit and join You in bringing Your Kingdom to the world. Amen.
