And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”

Job 1:21 (ESV)

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)

Strength in Surrender

Reflection It is never easy to answer why God allows suffering when He loves us so deeply. Job seemed undeserving of such pain, yet he humbly accepted what had happened and still blessed the Lord’s name. I ask myself: if I were Job, what would my response be? I would probably cling to his words: “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away.” After all, I came empty-handed into this world and will leave the same way. What have I done to deserve more? I also find encouragement in God’s Word: His grace is sufficient, and His power is made perfect in weakness. God’s grace may not remove suffering, but it sustains me through it. When I see how little I can control, I am reminded to depend on the One who holds all things.
Prayer Dear Lord, thank You for making this helpless person Your hopeful child. I bless Your name, for You alone are sufficient as I sail across the stormy sea. Teach me to trust Your grace in weakness and rest in Your power when I cannot control what is around me. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
