For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Mark 10:45 (ESV)

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

Breaking the Unforgiveness Cycle

Reflection One of the hardest aspects to total forgiveness is giving up the right to demand payment from those who have repeatedly offended or hurt us. Especially if the uncleared “debts” have accumulated over long periods of time, it becomes “uncollectable”. Holding onto “bad debts” only keeps us trapped and tormented in a “victim” cycle.

To break the cycle, we humbly come before Jesus to acknowledge that He is the ultimate ransom; God’s payment of all the wrongs that have been done. Jesus cancelled all debts by nailing them to the cross. We can surrender our right to payment to Him and receive the freedom and victory He has paid for us on the cross.

Prayer Merciful Father, thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to be the payment for all our sins and for the sins of those who have wronged us. I choose to give You all the debts that others owe me and receive what Jesus has paid for on the cross. Forgive me as I forgive others from the heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
